Installation

Extract the zipped package downloaded from ThemeForest to your desktop, in the extracted package you will find a zip file which is the wordpress theme. After uploading the theme, you have to activate it. Navigate to Appearance -> Themes page to activate the theme.

You can install the theme in two different ways:

  • FTP: Extract Sport.zip file and upload the extracted folder to /wp-content/ themes/ folder on your server.
  • WordPress: Navigate to Appearance -> Add New Themes -> Upload page. Select Sport.zip file. Press the Install Now button to upload and install the theme.

Upon activation of the Sport theme you will be notified to install required and recommended plugins.

Required plugins:

  • Sport Core Plugin
  • Sport Widgets Plugin
  • Sport Markup Generator Plugin
  • Revolution Slider
  • Timetable Plugin
  • Envato Toolkit

Recommended plugins:

  • Contact Form 7

The required plugins come bundled with the theme. Contact Form 7 is a free plugin and can be downloaded from the Wordpress Plugin repository.

To install and activate plugins simply follow on-screen instructions.

Quick start

This theme comes with 3 content files to get you started. If imported these files will populate your theme with placeholder content and fast track your website build.

  1. Navigate to your Tools menu -> choose Import, then upload the supplied content.XML file found in the content folder. By default Wordpress will require you to install the Wordpress importer.
  2. The second content file is called settings.txt and is the quick start file for Sport settings. To import it, navigate to -> Sport Settings -> Advanced -> and use the Import Settings function located on the bottom of screen. Note you need to copy and paste these settings then click import.
  3. The third content file is the quick start file for the Revolution Slider plugin. To import it, navigate to -> Revolution Slider and use the Import Slider located on the right of screen.

Please Note: The content.xml contains the content of the demo site, this includes woo-commerce shop etc. If you are not using these additional plugins that are installed on the demo site, (and you don’t have to), the import with trigger a failed message for the piece of content assigned to a missing plugin. The rest of the relevant content will have been imported fine.

Menu set up

This theme supports two locations for custom WordPress menus, and supports 3 levels of dropdown.

To setup the menu, navigate to Appearance -> Menus page. Enter a name for your menu and add links to the menu by using the options given on the left sidebar. You can manage your menus using the drag and drop functionality. After setting up your menu, select the Main Navigation Menu from the theme locations and hit the "Save" button.

Menu Icons.

You can assign icons to each menu item by adding an icon class to the relative menu item. Example "fa fa-bolt" to display a lightning bolt. To view the full list of icons and icon class names view our Shortcodes & Typography page.

For languages we have a range of flag icons to denote the a particular language. 249 flags are available. To use these flag icons, add the flag class to your menu item followed by the country code. Example "flag gb" for Great Britain. The flag icon filenames follow the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes.

Search button.

To add a search button to your menu:

  • Go to Appearance > Menus.
  • Add a link to the menu with these attributes:
    • URL: #
    • Link Text: <em class="fa fa-search "></em>

Finally add a CSS class to your menu item: "toolbar-search-btn".

If the CSS Classes input does not display in the menu item box (beneath Navigation Label) open up Screen Options (top right corner) and select Show Advanced Menu Properties > CSS Classes.

Sport settings

Sport comes with a settings panel specifically for this theme, this panel had been designed with you in mind and is super user friendly. This settings panel is broken down into 6 sections.

Specific Settings Notes
  • Logo: When uploading a logo, take note of the dimensions and the fact this theme is retina ready. The settings panel allows you to manipulate the maximum size and position of your logo until you get it just right.
  • If at the end of the day all is messed up, there is a reset button that restores Sport's default settings, find this in the Sport Advanced Menu.

Rather than going into detail here about each theme setting, we have provided contextual help through out the settings panel. By clicking a feature's question mark icon, documentation will be available about that feature.

Theme Updates

Periodical updates to this theme requires some updates on your behalf. To make the process smoother, we have included on the list of required plugins the Envato Toolkit plugin. This plugin automatically checks for updates to the purchased theme and allows automatic one click updates to the theme.

To set this plugin up correctly, after installation and activation you need to enter your Envato Username and an API Key that can be obtained from your Envato profile settings. Look for API Keys in the My Settings sidebar, and if you don;'t already have an API key, generate one.

Once you have inserted your username and API key, you will get an onscreen notification if the theme have an update available, and you can easily update the theme with a single click.

Plugins: The Sport theme plugins are not updated automatically when using the Envato Toolkit theme updater. To make sure your plugins are also up to date we recommend that you delete the Sport theme plugins before updating the theme. Once the theme is updated you will be prompted to install the updated plugins that come bundled with the latest version of the theme.

Import/Export settings

Periodical updates to this theme requires some updates on your behalf. To make the process smoother, when updating this theme manually and not with the Envato Toolkit we have an Import/Export theme settings section. This allows you to process theme updates whilst saving your own custom settings.

Import/export Settings Process
  • Go to settings > advanced > import/export section.
  • Click "generate settings data".
  • Copy the generated data, maybe save to text file for safe keeping.
  • Install the new Theme Canon theme update.
  • Hit the reset theme button.
  • Paste export data back into import/export window.
  • Click "import settings data".
  • You should get a "Import successfull" notice at the top of the screen.
  • Check that your old settings are back.

Widgets

Sport comes with custom widgets and the ability to create your very own custom widget areas.

You can find them along with the standard widgets at Appearance -> Widgets. The Sport widgets have been color-coded for easy viewing.

You can have multiple copies of each widget and set each of them up differently if you like. Many of the widgets have default values to guarantee an output even if the user forgets to fill out the widget settings.

You can create your own custom widget areas by navigating to settings > advanced > Widget Areas Manager and hit the "create new custom widget area" button. You can then select this widget area in the Sport Page Builder.

Revolution slider

As part of this theme we have included Revolution Slider, a premium slider that is super customisable. We have also included an quick start import file for the slider, see Quick Start of this help for more detail.

Revolution Slider has many options, all of which a explained in detail through the Help page for Revolution Slider, see help page here or click on the help button in the Revolution Slider panel.

Using the header builder

The Header Builder lets you create your own custom header. It is located at

Sport Settings > Header & Footer > Header Builder.

There are three header areas: Pre-header (top), main-header and post-header (bottom).

Use the header selects to build your header.

First choose the general layout:

  • Off: Turns header area off.
  • Custom center: Creates a single element slot at the center of the header area.
  • Custom left+right: Creates a left and right element slot.
  • Image: Turns the header area into a large header image.

Next select your elements for each header slot. Choose from:

  • Primary Menu.
  • Secondary Menu.
  • Logo.
  • Social Icons.
  • Text.
  • Toolbar.
  • Ad-banner.

Notice that some header elements are only available in certain header areas e.g. logo and ad-banner are only available in main-header and header image is only available in pre- and main-header.

Settings for each header element can be found further down on the same settings page.

Sport page builder

The Sport page builder lets you easily combine blocks of content to create your own page layouts. On the left you have all the available blocks and controls, and in the middle you have your canvas.

To create a new page builder template follow these steps:

  1. In the control panel click the button "Create New Template".
  2. Fill in a template name.
  3. Now select blocks from the add blocks modal into your template canvas.
  4. Each block usually has default content right when it is created to give you an easy starting point for editing.
  5. Go ahead and edit the content and settings of each block.
  6. You can collapse a block by clicking on the block header.
  7. You can drag and drop blocks to edit the order.
  8. Once you are done remember to click the "Save Changes" button.

To edit an existing page builder template simply choose the template from the Current template select in the template control panel. To delete a page builder block, you can drag and drop it on the bar that says drag here to delete.

Please Read Below "Setting up page builder pages" about how to set up a page with your page builder template

Block tabs

Some page builder blocks have an appearance tab that allows you to override the default color settings as set in the main Sport Appearance panel.

Please Note: These override settings are just that, an override. As such the color option will override all color settings for that block.

For even greater flexibility and control we have included an advanced tab, under which you can place custom CSS styles and apply custom classes to the select block.

Setting up page builder pages

Once you have created and saved a Page Builder Template, you need to assign the template to a Wordpress page.

Go to Pages and under Page Attributes -> Template select the Pagebuilder template. You will now have a select option in the Sport Page Settings for which Pagebuilder template you want to display on this page.

Select your Pagebuilder template and lastly add your new page to the menu. For more info on adding your page to the menu, See "Menu Set Up".

Note: that on the blog templates you can prepend or append page builder templates to the blog page. So you can set page builder blocks before or after the blog template.

Pre-designed pages

Sport comes with several pre-designed page templates (Contact etc).

To set up a pre-designed page template follow these steps:

  1. Go to Pages -> Add New.
  2. Give your page a title e.g. "Contact Page".
  3. In the Page Attributes box -> Template > Select a page template.
  4. Specific page settings now become available in the Sport Page Settings box. These settings are specific for each page template and provide an easy menu-driven way of adding and controlling content on each page.
  5. Publish.
  6. Add the page to your menu by going to Appearance -> Menus.

Setting up a gallery

This theme supports multiple galleries. To set up a gallery follow these steps:

  1. Go to Pages -> Add New.
  2. Give your gallery page a title e.g. "Gallery".
  3. In the Page Attributes box -> Template > Select Gallery.
  4. Once Gallery template is selected - gallery settings will become available in the Sport Page Settings box.

  1. Click the Add Media button to open up the Add Media dialog.
  2. Images must be added in the format of WordPress galleries so make sure you click Create Gallery in the Add Media dialog.
  3. When creating a gallery select your images and click the Create A New Gallery button.
  4. You can now set a caption for each image and rearrange your images by simply dragging and dropping them in the order you want.
  5. When you are ready click the Insert Gallery button.
  6. You will now see your images appear in the editor window.
  7. You can add as many WordPress galleries as would like. Images will appear in the same order as they appear in the galleries. Duplicate images will be removed.
  8. You can edit a WordPress gallery by left-clicking on it and selecting the pencil icon.
  9. If you need to rearrange the order of your WordPress galleries you can switch to the text editor and simply rearrange the shortcodes.
  10. You can also use the text editor to add a category attribute to the shortcodes e.g. [gallery ids="1,2,3" category="My Category"]. This category is used for the Isotope gallery filter menu. If no category attribute is found a default category will be automatically assigned.
  11. Publish.
  12. Add the Gallery to your menu by going to Appearance > Menus.

Setting up a galleries page

With a Galleries page you can create a single page that lists a preview of all your galleries in one place.

  1. First create a pagebuilder page (see the section Setting Up Page Builder Pages).
  2. Assign a pagebuilder template.
  3. Add the pagebuilder block called Gallery Preview to you pagebuilder template.
  4. Set up the Gallery Preview block with info corresponding to the gallery you wish to preview (title, link, images etc).
  5. Add as many Gallery Preview blocks as you would like.

Setting up a portfolio

A portfolio looks like a gallery but each image links through to a project post with additional information about each project. To set up a portfolio first we must create some projects:

  1. Go to Projects > Add New
  2. To create a new project add a title, content, a featured image and a project category. Publish the project.
  3. Repeat as many time as you like.

Next we set up the acutal portfolio page:

  1. Go to Pages > Add New.
  2. Give your portfolio page a title e.g. "My Portfolio".
  3. In the Page Attributes box > Template > Select Portfolio.
  4. Once Portfolio template is selected - portfolio settings will become available in the Sport Page Settings box.
  5. Select if clicking images should open up the featured project image in a lightbox or link through to the actual project post.
  6. Select layout / number of columns.
  7. Select which project categories to include in the portfolio.
  8. Publish.
  9. Add the Portfolio to your menu by going to Appearance > Menus.

Setting up a media gallery

You can also use portfolio pages to create media galleries e.g. video galleries or audio galleries. To create a video gallery:

  1. Go to Projects > Add New
  2. In the Feature Style setting instead of "Featured image" select "Use embeddable media instead of featured image".
  3. A new input now appears right under the Feature Style select. Insert video embed code here.
  4. Give your project a category e.g. "My Videos".
  5. Publish.
  6. Repeat as many time as you like.
  7. Finally set up the actual portfolio page like shown above and make sure you include the "My Videos" category.
  8. Publish.
  9. Add the video gallery to your menu by going to Appearance > Menus.

Advanced video galleries will display an image but clicking that image will open up a video in a lightbox. To create an advanced video gallery:

  1. Go to Projects > Add New
  2. In the Feature Style setting instead of "Featured image" select "Use featured image but open media link in lightbox".
  3. A new input now appears right under the Feature Style select. Insert media link here.
  4. Give your project a category e.g. "My Videos".
  5. Set a featured image for your project.
  6. Publish.
  7. Repeat as many time as you like.
  8. Finally set up the actual portfolio page like shown above and make sure you include the "My Videos" category.
  9. For advanced video galleries it is important that you set the Clicking Image option to "Opens Lightbox"
  10. Publish.
  11. Add the video gallery to your menu by going to Appearance > Menus.

Useful Tips:

When creating a project setting the Feature Style to "Use embeddable media instead of featured image" requires you to input a video embed code like:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/CD73VlzYq7U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

When creating a project setting the Feature Style to "Use featured image but open media link in lightbox" requires you to input a media link. Notice the distinction between ordinary embed codes and media links. A media link looks like:

http://player.vimeo.com/video/22428395
http://www.youtube.com/embed/CD73VlzYq7U
etc.

Notice that you can easily create media links from embed codes simply by using the src parameter and prepending "http:".

If you want your video to autoplay when opening in the lightbox you can add the autoplay parameter:

http://player.vimeo.com/video/22428395?autoplay=1

Placeholder Pages

The placeholder page template can be used as a "Coming Soon" / "Under Construction" landing page.

Simply put it is a page with no header (menu) and no footer and therefore it does not (by default) link through to the rest of your site. The header will however display for users who are logged in - which will allow logged-in users to navigate / work on the site.

It is important to notice that the placeholder does not password protect your content. If users can guess your site links (or have them bookmarked) they can still visit your site pages - to prevent this turn on construction mode (see Construction Mode section for more info)

If used as a "static homepage" your placeholder page will become the page that people reach when entering your main site url. When your site is ready to go live you can simply change "static homepage" from your placeholder page to your real homepage.

To create a placeholder page:

  1. First create a page builder template e.g. "Placeholder"
  2. Make sure that you do not use blocks that contain automatic links to the rest of your site like for example the Featured Posts block.
  3. Now attach your Placeholder page builder template to a placeholder page.
  4. Go to Pages -> Add New.
  5. Give your page a title e.g. "My Placeholder Page".
  6. In the Page Attributes box -> Template > Select the Placeholder template.
  7. A Page Builder template select now becomes available in the Sport Page Settings box.
  8. Select the "Placeholder" page builder template.
  9. Publish.

To set your placeholder page as front page:

  1. Go to Settings > Reading > Front page displays > A static page > Select "My Placeholder Page".
  2. Save changes.

Construction Mode

When construction mode is turned on only logged-in users will be able to see your site pages, while everyone else will see a custom under construction message.

Only exception are the placeholder pages which will still display for all visitors.

We suggest that you set up a Placeholder page as front page (see Placeholder Pages section for more info) and turn on construction mode when working on a new site. This will mean:

Non logged-in visitors:

  • will only be able to see your placeholder page.
  • all other pages will display a notice "This site is under construction!" (Can be changed in options)

Logged in users:

  • will be able to see placeholder page but with a menu that lets them navigate to the rest of the site.
  • all pages will display as normal.

You can turn construction mode on/off and set Construction mode notice at Sport settings > General settings > General.

Setting up the blog

To set up the blog follow these steps:

  1. Go to Pages -> Add New.
  2. Give your blog page a title e.g. "Blog".
  3. In the Page Attributes box -> Template > Select Blog.
  4. Publish.
  5. Add the Blog to your menu by going to Appearance -> Menus.

Note: These steps above just set up the page link to the blog. Don't worry putting content in this page, all Wordpress posts will be included into the blog.

Additional note: On the blog templates you can prepend or append page builder templates to the blog page.

Post formats

When creating a new post remember to select the post format. This will determine how the post is displayed in the theme. You can find the post format box on the Edit Post page in the right hand column.

Available post formats are:

  • Standard.
  • Quote.
  • Gallery.
  • Video.
  • Audio.

Several of these post formats have further settings that will become available in the Sport Post Settings box once the specific post format has been selected. For the Quote post format for example you can choose to have your quote displayed as a standard quote or styled as a tweet.

Post slider

By default the featured image is displayed at the top of the post. You can replace the featured image with a post slider that will display images in a slider in place of the featured image.

To ativate the post slider go to the Post Settings > Post Slider - and check the Show Post Slider checkbox.

You can now add images to you post slider by clicking the Add Media button. Images must be added in the format of WordPress galleries so make sure you click Create Gallery in the Add Media dialog.

When creating a gallery select your images and click the Create A New Gallery button. You can now set a caption for each image and rearrange your images by simply dragging and dropping them in the order you want. When you are ready click the Insert Gallery button.

You will now see your images appear in the post slider editor window. Add as many WordPress galleries as would like. Images will appear in the same order as they appear in the Galleries. Duplicate images will be removed.

You can edit a WordPress gallery by left-clicking on it and selecting the pencil icon. If you need to rearrange the order of your WordPress galleries you can switch to the text editor and simply rearrange the shortcodes.

Remember to update the post for changes to take effect.

Shortcodes and HTML snippets

This theme comes with short-codes and html snippets to speed up your work flow. HTML snippets and shortcodes are small pieces of HTML created to help you style your theme.

Shortcodes and HTML snippets are found in the WYSIWYG editor on show kitchen sink mode. Simply scroll through the list to a desired snippet and click. The shortcode or HTML snippet will be inserted into your editor. For examples of how the editor styles look, check out the Sport Shortcodes and Typography Page.

Some Code

Whilst almost all of the editor styles are straight forward and can be used from visual mode, sometimes you may find it necessary to switch between visual mode and text mode in the editor.

Animations

Settings for theme animations can be found at Sport Settings > Appearance. These control animations for sliders, lazy load effect and menus.

Scroll-to animations.

With scroll-to animations you can create a link that when clicked will scroll the page to a certain element.

In general all links starting with # will scroll to the first element on the page with the class defined after the #-sign. #scrollhere will scroll to the element with a "scrollhere" class.

You can use this to create menu items that will let you scroll down to a certain element on the page:

First create the menu item:

  • Go to Appearance > Menus.
  • Add a link menu item with properties:
    • URL: #scrollhere
    • Link Text: Scroll
  • Save menu.

Next go to the Page Builder:

  • On a block in the Advanced tab add custom block class: "scrollhere".

Scroll-to links linking to other pages.

The method above will activate a scroll-to animation on the same page. However it is also possible to have an animation target on another page.

To achieve this follow the method above but instead of putting #scrollhere as the URL you must add a complete URL followed by the animation target. For example:

  • URL: http://www.mysite.com/another-page/#scrollhere

Make sure that the targeted page has an element with the "scrollhere" class.

When this is set up clicking the scroll-to link will change page and after a short delay will activate the scroll-to animation scrolling the page down to the target element.

Contact form

The contact page on Sport works best with Contact Form 7.

Contact Form 7 can manage multiple contact forms, plus you can customize the form and the mail contents flexibly with simple markup. You can either search for Contact Form 7 through your Wordpress theme -> install or download it directly here.

Default Contact Form
[text* text-448 id:name placeholder "What's your name"]
[email* email-383 id:email "Email goes here"]
[textarea* textarea-885 id:message placeholder "What's this about"]
[submit id:submit "Send Message"]

Note

Contact Form 7 has many other settings, however we recommend that you start with the Sport default. As Contact Form 7 is a third party plugin, Support for contact form issues should be handled through the Wordpress page: Contact Form 7

  1. Go to Pages > Cart.
  2. In Page Attributes > Template - select Page with Sidebar.
  3. Update.

Child theme

Sport comes bundled with its own child theme (Sport-child).

Child themes are a great way to modify existing themes because modifications made through a child theme are not deleted when you update the parent theme.

To install the Sport child theme you first have to install the main Sport theme. Once this is done you simply install the Sport child theme like you would any other theme.

When you first activate the Sport child theme you will in effect be running the Sport parent theme because no modifications have been made yet. But you are now set up to start modifying the Sport child theme by editing the Sport child style.css or by adding edited files to the Sport-child theme folder.

You can learn more about Child Themes in the WordPress Codex

FAQ

When I try to install your theme I get the error message: “The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.”

This happens when you try to upload the entire zip folder that you downloaded from Themeforest. This folder contains a lot of things beside the theme itself. So you should: 1) Unzip the zip folder you downloaded 2) Inside you will see another zip folder called Sport.zip, this is the file you need to upload to WordPress to install the theme.

I have just installed your theme but now all my images seem to have the wrong sizes and do not fit your theme.

You should download the plugin “Regenerate Thumbnails” and run it. This will create copies of your images in the sizes needed by the theme. Don’t worry your original images will not be altered.

How do I add images to my gallery?
  1. Set up a category for gallery posts.
  2. Create post with featured image and assign to category.
  3. Create page with gallery page template, choose gallery style and choose to display your gallery post category.
